Line of Duty boss for The Crown-style Man Utd show

Football club Manchester United is set to get The Crown treatment in a show serialising the club's highs and lows, as Jed Mercurio is reportedly in talks to join the project.

Mercurio, known for Line of Duty, Bodyguard and Netflix's upcoming Trinity, has reportedly been involved in conversations about the Manchester United show as the English club has inked a deal with production company Lionsgate (via The Athletic).

Focusing on the 'history of the club' that saw the likes of George Best, David Beckham and Wayne Rooney among its ranks, the drama is expected to take a page out of The Crown book.

The upcoming series is looking to have a similar style and concept as Netflix's royal drama. This means the show on the Red Devils is likely to cover decades since the inception of the club in 1878, back when it was still called Newton Heath LYR.

Additional details about the series are being kept under wraps at this stage. Meanwhile, Mercurio's involvement hasn't been officially confirmed. Digital Spy has reached out to Mercurio's representatives for comment, but didn't immediately hear back.

Last June, it was announced that Mercurio would be the writer, showrunner and executive producer of new series Trinity for Netflix.

The eight-part show sees the writer reunite with Game of Thrones actor Richard Madden, who starred on Mercurio's 2018 ITV hit series Bodyguard.

Also starring Loki's Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Commander Katherine Decker, Trinity is a conspiracy thriller following the relationship between Decker and a senior Government official, Secretary of Defense Webb Preston (Madden), as it turns dangerous.

"A heroic female Naval Officer (Mbatha-Raw) becomes involved with the outwardly charismatic Secretary of Defense (Madden), only to discover he may be at the heart of a dangerous conspiracy," teases the official logline.

Mercurio will also return for a hotly-anticipated new season of Line of Duty, announced last November.

Stars Vicky McClure, Adrian Dunbar and Martin Compston are all set to reprise their roles as the AC-12, now rebranded to the Inspectorate of Police Standards, tackle "their most sensitive case so far".

"Everyone involved in Line of Duty feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans," Mercurio said when the seventh season was confirmed.

"We're privileged to have had so many of you follow the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh. Corruption in this country is supposed to have come to an end while Line of Duty was off air so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Trinity currently has no release date.
