Bruno Fernandes’ contract at Man United is due to expire in June 2027, so he could leave in the summer.
Bruno Fernandes has been a bright spark in the six or so years that he’s been at Old Trafford. Not much has gone right for United, but if it has, Fernandes has likely had a huge role to play in it.
Last summer, he nearly left the club, as Man United were willing to sell him to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal for £100m, but the captain didn’t want to leave. However, reports have since suggested that Fernandes could be willing to leave in the summer, especially considering the changes at Old Trafford at the moment.
Reports have said that Fernandes has ‘lost faith’ in the project at Man United, and after the Ruben Amorim debacle, could that be the nail in the coffin for Fernandes’ spell at Old Trafford?
Man United planning talks with Fernandes
It was understood that United were very happy for Fernandes to leave last summer, but it seems that the club has changed its tune, as fresh reports indicate that the Red Devils want their captain to extend his contract.
According to ESPN, Man United are planning talks with Fernandes about his future at the club, following the World Cup with Portugal in the summer. Club bosses have reportedly told him they want to keep him around for at least one more year, which would see him run out his contract.
It is understood that Bruno himself will make the choice; however, United hope that he can sign the one-year option in his contract, which would keep him at the club until June 2028, when he would be 33 years-old.
Man United are reportedly set to ask Fernandes for a decision as fast as possible, but the player himself will make his decision after the World Cup.
Man United could sign ‘Perfect’ Bruno Fernandes replacement in summer
If the 31-year-old was to leave in the summer, United would most likely invest heavily in an attacking midfielder to replace him, as they will need that creative outlet who can feed the likes of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha alongside him.
The Red Devils haven’t been linked with too many attacking midfielders in recent weeks, which is no surprise considering they still have Fernandes, but looking at long-term targets, there are a couple of options for United.
If Bruno were to leave this year, Paz would be the perfect replacement, as he is young but has already proven his ability in a top European league (Serie A). He plays as an advanced playmaker and is very effective in chance creation, something that Fernandes has excelled at over the past five years.
Paz has been a crucial player for Cesc Fabregas’ Como side this season, scoring eight goals and providing six assists in 22 games. Compare that to Fernandes’ five goals and nine assists in 20 games, and Paz seems the ideal long-term replacement.
