Man Utd eyeing move for 'world-class' £100m Dutch star in record-breaking transfer - report

Manchester United are keeping close tabs on Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven amid growing uncertainty over his future in north London, according to reports.

The Old Trafford side are believed to be among the clubs tracking the 24-year-old Dutchman, alongside Premier League rivals Liverpool, who are known admirers.

Van de Ven is believed to be looking to depart Tottenham amid a disappointing season under Thomas Frank, with the club sitting just 14th in the Premier League.

While Spurs are in a strong negotiating position, with the 'world-class' defender’s contract running until 2029, they are looking to tie Van de Ven to fresh terms amid his growing list of suitors.

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Manchester United are long-term admirers of Van de Ven, having tracked the defender since his time at Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.

The Red Devils reportedly view the Dutchman as an ideal profile for their summer rebuild, which is already set to see midfielder Casemiro depart at the end of his contract.

Tottenham are claimed to be aware of growing interest from Premier League clubs and have responded by placing an eye-watering price tag on Van de Ven.

The north London side reportedly value the ‘incredible’ 24-year-old at £100m, and a deal in that region would make him the most expensive defender in football history, surpassing the £80m Manchester United spent on Harry Maguire in 2019.

Tottenham remain hopeful they can tie Van de Ven to a new long-term deal, but are aware there is little chance of persuading the Dutchman to sign.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also claimed to be monitoring the situation, although any movement in January appears unlikely at present.

Manchester United have announced that Casemiro will be leaving the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The Red Devils are set to part ways with the 33-year-old four years after his arrival from Real Madrid in the summer of 2022, with a new signing likely to arrive as a replacement in the summer.

United have been linked with moves for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, while incomings this month appear unlikely at present.

The Old Trafford side have yet to register any major transfer activity in the January transfer window, having endured a turbulent month, with Michael Carrick replacing Ruben Amorim in charge.
