Soccer fans, it's time to rejoice – your favourite soccer team is receiving a television treatment unlike the one you have seen so far.
In a multi-million-pound deal, Lionsgate and Manchester United have agreed to develop a The Crown-style dramatized television series, veering off from the traditional sports docuseries flooding the market. (via The Athletic)
While there are plenty of minute details to flesh out, the show will weave the decades of history of the club. And when it comes to history, Man United tales can go on and on. The most prominent chapters in the show could include the Munich Air Disaster of 1958, an aircraft tragedy killing 23 people, including eight players. The subsequent recovery under manager Sir Matt Rusby, who rebuilt the team from ashes to win the club's first European Cup 10 years later in 1968. It could also explore Alex Ferguson ending the dry streak of the club and establishing their reign.
The deal will see Man United receive a guaranteed sum if the show comes to fruition and future royalties, which will be shared between Lionsgate and the club. While there has been no confirmation yet, one of the most successful British writers/novelists/producers, Jed Mercurio (creator ofLine of Duty), is in conversation to onboard the project.
