Interest in Nottingham Forest midfielder Douglas Luiz as deadline day nears comes as no surprise to head coach Sean Dyche.

Luiz is due to spend the season on loan at the City Ground from Juventus. However, the Reds have a decision to make regarding the midfielder as the deal includes a conditional obligation to buy.

The Brazilian’s Forest stint has been hampered by injury but he has also struggled for regular game time with Dyche’s side. Chelsea are reportedly considering swooping for Luiz amid uncertainty about his future.

Asked about the links with the Stamford Bridge outfit, Dyche said of Luiz: “He is a very good player. I said when we played him in Europe we probably rushed him back, but because of his experience he has used that wisely to be back.

“It doesn't surprise me there is interest from other clubs in good players. That's the nature of the business.

“It's a doubled-edged sword. You sort of want people interested in your players because that means they are doing a good job and are good players, but you don't because you don't want them coming knocking on the door. That's part of modern football.”

The Reds’ conditional obligation to buy Luiz is understood to be appearance based. The reported €25 million (£22m) clause will be triggered if he makes 15 Premier League appearances of 45 minutes or more.

To date, the 27-year-old has featured just eight times in the league for Forest, with three of those appearances from off the bench. He started Thursday night’s 1-0 Europa League defeat away to Braga but was as guilty as any of his teammates of not making an impact in Portugal.

The Reds are yet to add to their squad so far this month and their sole significant piece of business was loaning out Arnaud Kalimuendo to Eintracht Frankfurt. However, they are closing in on a loan move for Italian forward Lorenzo Lucca and are expected to make further signings before the window closes on February 2.
