The midfielder looks rejuvenated under new manager Carrick, and could sign a new contract this month.

Michael Carrick has had a lot to deal with since coming in to replace Ruben Amorim at Man United, but one of his biggest dilemmas was in midfield. The Red Devils are keen to sign a new midfielder in the summer, but Carrick needs to ensure success before then.

Man United in contract talks with Mainoo

Mainoo shone in the Manchester derby last weekend, putting in an instrumental performance in the United midfield. After the game, Carrick was delighted with the 20-year-old’s contribution and will likely give him a bigger role moving forward.

The Man United board agrees with Carrick too, as Sky Sports reports that Man United are in talks over a new contract with Mainoo, aiming to keep him around for several years to come, as he is a real building block for the future.

Mainoo’s current contract is due to expire in June 2027, but if he signs a new deal, United are hoping to tie him down, especially now they’ve found out that Casemiro will be leaving, as they need a holding midfielder to rely on heading into the managerial change in the summer. Assuming Carrick doesn’t get the permanent job.

The 20-year-old didn’t start a game in the Premier League this season under Amorim, but as soon as Carrick came in, he got a start and was one of the standout performers, sending a real message to his former boss, Amorim.

Carrick excited by Mainoo at Man United

It is no surprise that a centre-midfield player looks to be rejuvenated under Carrick, as the Man United head coach knows how to perform as a midfielder in red better than most. Carrick is a huge fan of Mainoo and has previously spoken out about how impressed he’s been by the English gem.

Carrick spoke about Mainoo’s lack of game time whilst appearing on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel earlier in the year: “He’s a breath of fresh air, the way he takes the ball, plays forward and commits people. He can play, dribble and pass. That doesn’t leave you; it can just, in waves, come and go at times.”

The Man United board will hope to tie down the midfielder to become a mainstay in the Red Devils’ side for the long-term, because if not, clubs around the Premier League and Europe will come sniffing to try and pinch the 20-year-old from Old Trafford.
