Man United are reportedly considering bringing back one of their former academy players.
Man United have had a very quiet transfer window so far in terms of players coming in. The Red Devils’ focus has been on the manager role more, after they sacked Ruben Amorim, and replaced him with Michael Carrick until the end of the season.
Much of United’s transfer business over the past few years hasn’t been the best, as they have let some really talented players leave. The majority of players who have left United in recent seasons have found success elsewhere, with the likes of Marcus Rashford at Barcelona, Antony at Real Betis, Scott McTominay at Napoli, and more.
However, perhaps the most intriguing is Mason Greenwood, who joined Marseille in 2024 after off-the-field issues left him exiled from Man United. He has since scored 20 42 goals in 63 games for the French side, and has managed to turn his career around again.
Man United considering a return for Mason Greenwood
Greenwood has been arguably one of the best attackers in Europe since he moved to Marseille, and he’s beginning to fulfil his potential, which many at Man United spotted from an early age.
However, according to Journalist Pete O’Rourke, United have discussed bringing Greenwood back to Old Trafford in somewhat of a surprising transfer U-turn, just two years after he left United.
O’Rourke posted on X: “Manchester United officials have internally discussed the idea of bringing Mason Greenwood back to the club. The Red Devils included a buy-back clause when they sold the winger to Marseille in the summer of 2024. Greenwood has scored 20+ goals in his two seasons in France.”
Greenwood was one of Man United’s brightest academy talents. He came up through the ranks and ended up making over 120 appearances for the first team, scoring 35 goals and providing 12 assists. It seems that may not be all for the 24-year-old at Old Trafford.
Greenwood subject to £87m bid
Reports aren’t just suggesting that Man United could bring Greenwood back to England, as reports in Spain claim that there is interest in the 24-year-old from the Saudi Pro League, too.
Spanish outlet Fichajes report that Saudi side Al-Hilal, who bid £100m to sign Bruno Fernandes last summer, have bid £87m to sign Greenwood, as they want a talisman to revamp their attacking line-up. It is understood that Marseille turned Al-Hilal down, as Greenwood is their prized asset, and they would demand a higher fee for him.
It is also understood that Greenwood is settled at Marseille and isn’t interested in a move right now. But, with Man United being a potential suitor, there may be a chance that he could return to the Premier League, and potentially boost his chances of getting integrated into the England squad.
However, as things stand, the winger position isn’t necessarily a massive priority for United, so they will more likely keep their attention on bringing in a new holding midfielder.
