Manchester United's transfer speculation is intensifying as the January transfer window approaches its closing stages. Michael Carrick's squad are yet to make any signings this window and the likelihood of adding to their team remains slim.

Nevertheless, several midfielders have been connected with a switch to Old Trafford. The United leadership are only anticipated to strengthen Carrick's side at the correct price or if one of their long-term objectives are snatched by a competitor.

This week, Cole Palmer has surfaced as an unexpected summer possibility. The England international was a United fan during his youth and it's been suggested that he is becoming restless in London.

There have also been connections to a new forward amid uncertainty surrounding Joshua Zirkzee's future. With all of that considered, we've compiled the latest United transfer rumours and speculation.

Chelsea's Palmer position

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has stated Cole Palmer is content at the club following links to United this week. Palmer was a United supporter during his childhood and maintains a close friendship with Kobbie Mainoo.

Reports this week have suggested that the playmaker is dissatisfied in the capital and might return to Manchester. However, Rosenior has maintained he remains part of Chelsea's future plans.

"I've had numerous conversations with Cole and he seems very happy to be here," he said. "He's a huge part in our long-term plans. My job and the club's job is to get him into a situation where he can consistently perform to the level he wants to. There was frustration in the Brentford game. We need to look after him and that's why I didn't involve him in the last game."

Striker 'waiting' for United move

Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta is reportedly 'hoping' that United make a bid for him this January as he seeks to depart the Selhurst Park club. Mateta was connected with United last summer following his impressive scoring record in London.

The France international has notified Palace of his wish to move on, with his preference reportedly being a Champions League side. His deal runs until 2027 and he will allegedly cost £35m.

According to reports, Mateta is hoping that United approach him in January to secure his signature. However, there isn't any firm interest from the Old Trafford side at this point.
