Aston Villa have emerged as a contender to sign Juventus’ Weston McKennie, according to a report from Italy.
The American knows the Premier League well from his loan spell at Leeds United in 2023. He struggled during his time at Elland Road.
Despite his disastrous spell with the Whites, Tuttosport reported last month that he isn’t closing the door on an England move. Aston Villa could be an option for him.
Il Giornale, relayed by Tutto Juve, cover Unai Emery’s side and the 27-year-old’s current situation at Juventus.
Juve replaced Igor Tudor and Luciano Spalletti in October. That didn’t impact the midfielder’s role in the team. He’s been a regular for the Serie A side this season, playing 28 matches and even managed five goals and four assists.
Il Giornale say McKennie has consistently improved under Spalletti and has been a key player for the Italian club.
This has clearly not gone unnoticed as Unai Emery’s side, Atletico Madrid and others Italian clubs have shown interest. All these teams are ‘crazy’ about the former Leeds United man.
He has less than six months left on his contract and his future beyond this season needs to be clarified. The Turin club want to quickly secure the player’s long-term.
Aston Villa ready to make a move
The report states Juve will face competition from McKennie’s interested parties, including Aston Villa and the La Liga side. They add Aston Villa and Diego Simeone are pressing to sign him. This is more likely for the summer rather than the winter market.
Emery’s side and the La Liga side, according to Il Giornale, are ready to make a move to sign the Juventus player. This has to be a decisive one from Aston Villa to get ahead of the competition.
McKennie reportedly favouring a move to the Premier League should give Aston Villa an edge over Atletico and Italian clubs.
