Man United’s squad still has a lot of work needing to be done to it, could a new manager bring some familiar faces?
Man United have only just started to rebuild a squad that was imbalanced and lacking in both depth and quality.
The summer transfer window saw reinforcements arrive in the final third at a sum of over £200m, with mixed results so far in terms of how successful they have been. THe undoubted success has been Bryan Mbeumo who was badly missed on African Cup of Nations duty with Matheus Cunha only showing fleeting glimpses of what he is capable of. Benjamin Sesko at least has time on his side but has yet to set the heather alight. Four goals in 17 games isn’t what was expected from a £75m transfer fee.
New Man United manager could shape transfer business
Michael Carrick has taken charge until the season and regardless of whether or not he gets the gig on a permanent basis, United’s recruitment team will still be working hard to add the players needed to turn the team from threatening to qualify for Europe to potentially making the Champions League. One factor that might be considered is if United already have their next manager lined up with Oliver Glasner continuing to be linked amid a period of unrest at Selhurst Park. The Eagles boss isn’t happy with having Marc Guehi sold from under his feet.
Should Glasner be appointed as the United boss he might want to raid his former club with three players in particular who might make a difference for the Red Devils, two having already been linked with a move to Old Trafford. It is no secret that the forward line needs more depth in the no.9 position with Sesko being asked to do a lot of the work on his own or Mbeumo moving up a line to add pace and energy. In Jean Philippe-Mateta, United could land a player who offers in one player what it takes both of the Red Devils current options to do.
If United want the France international, they will have to move quickly with several clubs already said to be close to striking a deal with the 28-year old who has eight goals in 22 Premier League appearances this season. With just a year left of his contract at Palace, he has intimated that he wants to leave and, rather than losing him for nothing, it looks like a deal could be struck. A proven goalscorer who wouldn’t break the bank could be the perfect signing.
Who else might Glasner want at Old Trafford?
Maybe not an obvious signing, but United need to upgrade in several positions and one of those is at right-back. Capable of playing as a wing-back, right-back or as a centre-half, Daniel Munoz would add experience and quality to the defence. Not only is the Colombia international an aggressive defender, he also has three goals and three assists in 14 Premier League games this campaign. United simply don’t have enough players who are capable of chipping in with goals and assists throughout the team and Munoz would make a difference.
