Man United ‘still feel’ missed summer signing ‘would be right’ for them - ‘many wonder’ if he regrets move

Manchester United were beaten to summer transfer target Liam Delap over the summer

Manchester United are planning ahead for their summer transfer business. While they consider new options, they are also seemingly mulling over those they have previously failed to sign.

The former Ipswich Town striker was one of the most sought-after transfer targets during the summer window but he chose Chelsea above anyone else.

Man United still admirers of Liam Delap

Last summer, Delap commanded intense interest after his season with Ipswich Town. Despite the team being relegated, the striker still impressed by scoring 12 Premier League goals. An impressive stat considering the Tractor Boys banked just four wins throughout the season.

Delap was plucked from his relegation woes fairly quickly, with Chelsea coming out on top above other rivals. However, United had also been in the race for his signature.

According to a report from CaughtOffside at the time, the Red Devils were ‘confident at various points’ that Delap would choose Old Trafford over Stamford Bridge. In the end, United were snubbed, with their lack of European football likely playing a big part in it.

Now, according to The Independent, United ‘still feel’ the 22-year-old striker ‘would have been right for them’.

‘Many wondering’ if Liam Delap regrets Chelsea move

The Independent report also says that ‘many are wondering’ whether Delap regrets his move to Chelsea.

Since his summer arrival, he has struggled for regular time on the pitch and it took until this month for him to score his first Premier League goal for the Blues. Delap has also been hampered with injuries, overall limiting him to just 13 league appearances and eight starts so far.

The injury situation cannot be helped but United clearly still see the quality in Delap that they feel would benefit their current frontline. The 22-year-old has been impressing but his goal tally is not yet reflective of his work ethic.

Prior to Liam Rosenior’s appointment at Chelsea, interm manager Calum McFarlane lauded Delap as ‘brilliant’ and admitted he hopes his goal against Fulham will give him the confidence he needs to unleash his full potential for the rest of the season.
