Sheffield Wednesday dealt Harry Amass blow as Manchester United plan revealed after Norwich…

Norwich City confirmed the signing of former Sheffield Wednesday loanee Harry Amass on Saturday.

Sheffield Wednesday’s hopes of bringing Harry Amass back to Hillsborough for the remainder of the season were officially brought to an end on Saturday after he completed a move to Norwich City.

Amass departed Hillsborough following the first weekend in January after his loan spell from Manchester United came to an end and the Owls retained hope of being able to bring him back to Hillsborough for the rest of the campaign.

However, the left-back, who made 21 appearances during his time with Wednesday, chipping in with one goal, has sealed a move to Championship counterparts Norwich, joining the Canaries on loan for the rest of the season.

It has been claimed Amass has moved to Carrow Road as United are wary of the fact Wednesday’s squad is expected to become even weaker by the end of this month’s transfer window.

Wednesday icon Barry Bannan, who was in tears following the Owls’ defeat to Bristol City on Saturday, is expected to seal a move to Millwall in the coming days, while there are also no guarantees the likes of Yan Valery, Svante Ingelsson and Bailey Cadamarteri will still be at the club beyond the 7pm deadline on February 2.

For Amass, the switch to Norwich, with respect to Wednesday, will offer him the opportunity to feature in a more competitive team. The Canaries have been making sharp progress in recent weeks and now look a strong bet to avoid relegation to League One this term, whereas the Owls are already as good as relegated.

Amass opens up on Norwich switch

Admitting Norwich boss Philippe Clement and sporting director Ben Knapper had been keeping tabs on him during his time at Wednesday, Amass told the Canaries’ club website: “I've spoken with Ben and the gaffer.

“They've both told me that they've been watching me since Sheffield Wednesday and a bit before that, and they've liked what they've seen. They like the way that I carry the ball, the way that I am on the ball, the hard work that I show.

“They spoke to me and said they see that I can do good things here, they believe that it'll be a benefit for the club and for me, so it should be good both ways.”

Amass’ switch to Norwich will also give him the opportunity to play in a back-four as a left-back after serving as a left wing-back in a back-five system at Hillsborough.

United have recently ditched their three-at-the-back formation following the exit of head coach Ruben Amorim and have reverted to a back-four under interim boss Michael Carrick.

Asked what United’s plans are for him, Amass continued: “They want me around at the end of this season, we'll see what happens when I go back. They're excited for me to go out now and show what I can do, and keep getting better.”

The 18-year-old could make his debut when Norwich host Championship leaders Coventry City on Monday night at Carrow Road.
