Manchester United academy stars and their parents were thrilled to see the back of Ruben Amorim after he was critical of the youth set-up whilst he made little use of their next generation.
Michael Carrick has been appointed as his replacement until the end of the season and his arrival has been well received given his understanding of the club and its traditions - with using academy players a key part of their DNA.
Amorim, despite the club's poor form throughout his tenure, rarely turned to the academy to utilise their talent. His attitude and sporadic use of Kobbie Mainoo was a concern with the midfielder previously a big hit under Erik ten Hag. His reduced minutes then saw him linked with a loan move.
In December the Portuguese boss hit out at United’s young stars, including striker Chido Obi and Harry Amass, as he claimed: “We as a club sometimes forget who we are and that’s that’s the feeling that I have. I understand everything is the environment, is the moment of the players, the kids they feel entitled.”
Carrick in the building is now seen as a huge plus. The ex-midfielder's son plays for the U16s and the parents of those in the set-up believe he will have a greater understanding.

A source told The Sun: “Carrick has been a regular at the training ground following the progress of his son. He is a lovely welcoming guy who always has time for everyone. People respect him and admire him because of his United career, but they also feel like he gets what it means to have a son in the academy. Parents were appalled by Amorim’s comments. Anyone in professional football should know how hard it is to make a career in football at any level, let alone at United.”
On Tuesday Carrick and his coaching team watched United's under-21s play against Sporting Lisbon. Darren Fletcher, who managed United for two games as caretaker following Amorim’s sacking, is also highly thought of by academy parents.

The source added: “He is respected and well regarded by the kids and the parents. It’s great for a parent to hear Darren Fletcher shouting the name of their son during a game because you know he knows his talents and areas of weakness.”
The likes of JJ Gabriel and Kai Rooney are among the players coming through the ranks with the former having a particularly high reputation.
Since 1937 United have always included an academy player in their matchday side - a run that is now spanning more than 4,300 matches.
