Manchester United’s focus on Sunday would have been on their Premier League clash against Arsenal, but some eyes may have been across the capital at Selhurst Park.

Adam Wharton was in action for Crystal Palace in their match against Chelsea, with the midfielder being heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months.

Palace were on the receiving end of a 3-1 defeat to Chelsea on home soil, in a game that ended early for Wharton.

The England international was sent off for two yellow cards picked up in quick succession in the second half at Selhurst Park.

Even though the game ended in a way Wharton would not have liked, it’s unlikely to see rumours linking United with a move for the midfielder come to an end anytime soon.

Reports in the last few months have linked United with a move for Wharton, as they look to strengthen their midfield options.

Ruben Amorim’s departure as the club’s head coach has not seen the rumours stop, despite the uncertainty of who will be in charge for the start of next season.

United could be in the market for a new midfielder in the summer, especially considering the news earlier this week that Casemiro will leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expires.

Whether this will prompt United to make a move for Wharton remains to be seen, with the midfielder’s contract at Palace set to run until the summer of 2029, having joined the club from Blackburn Rovers in February 2024 on a five-and-a-half-year deal.

Palace are also reported to have placed a £100million price tag on Wharton’s signature for last summer and for the January transfer window.

Given the midfielder would still have three years left to run on his deal at Selhurst Park, that is not expected to decrease significantly.
