Head coach Sean Dyche has put midfielder Douglas Luiz’s absence for Nottingham Forest’s 2-0 victory over Brentford down to illness.

The Juventus loanee started for the Reds in midweek as they lost 1-0 to Braga in the Europa League. But he was not in the match squad at the Gtech Community Stadium as the visitors boosted their Premier League survival hopes with three important points.

Luiz’s future at the City Ground is in doubt with little more than a week of the transfer window to go. He is wanted by Chelsea and could see his Forest spell ended early.

Asked about the Brazilian after his team’s win in the capital, Dyche said: "He's ill. He's got what's going around - the flu sort of situation.

"He came in and spoke to the doctor. We said we had to get him out of the camp because we had such a long injury list when we got here and we don't want illness to creep in as well.

"When you are travelling on planes and all the rest of it, it spreads like wildfire. Hopefully he will recover quickly.”

The Reds have a decision to make regarding Luiz. He is due to spend the season Trentside but his loan deal includes a conditional obligation to buy, which is understood to be appearance-based.

Reports have suggested if the 27-year-old makes 15 league appearances of 45 minutes or more, it would trigger Forest’s £22 million obligation to buy him permanently. Asked if he expects Luiz to still be part of the squad going forward, Dyche said: "We'll see.”

Goals from Igor Jesus and Taiwo Awoniyi secured the result for the visitors against the Bees. It leaves Dyche’s charges five points above the relegation zone.

“Pleased with the result. First half, we played very well with and without the ball,” Dyche said.

"Second half, we managed the game differently. I was really pleased with the other side of the game - tactically and the defensive organisation. Really important performances from Matz (Sels) and the two centre-halves, especially from Nikola (Milenkovic) who played in the week as well - we were asking a lot of him.

“The resilience of the side is improving. We have just taken six points away from home and a point against the league leaders. Seven points out of three games is very pleasing.”
