Manchester United have had a quiet January transfer window, with the Reds appearing more likely to strengthen their squad during the summer months. However, this hasn't stopped the speculation from flowing around Old Trafford.
While there was talk that Michael Carrick might enter the market to boost his side's chances of European qualification in the second-half of the season, it now seems the interim head coach will work with the players he inherited from Ruben Amorim.
Consequently, attention has shifted away from the winter window, as United identify targets for the summer and beyond into 2026/27. Taking everything into account, the MEN looks at some of the latest transfer news, speculation and gossip surrounding United...
Adam Wharton priority
According to a report from the I, Manchester United have placed Adam Wharton at the top of their midfield shortlist ahead of the summer transfer window. Casemiro will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, prompting the Reds to search the market for an appropriate replacement, reports the Mirror.
While there has been speculation that United could revive their interest in Carlos Baleba, having pursued the Brighton star last summer before being deterred by his £100million valuation, it now appears they will prioritise a move for Wharton. Crystal Palace are anticipated to demand a fee of between £60m and £70m for the 21-year-old central midfielder, considering he is contracted until 2029 and is only beginning to reach his prime years.
However, United reportedly view the player as a worthwhile investment as they seek to strengthen an ageing midfield. Should Manchester United succeed in their pursuit, it would represent a significant setback for Palace, particularly as they have already lost Marc Guehi to Manchester City this month, whilst Jean-Philippe Mateta's future at the club remains uncertain.
Additionally, Oliver Glasner will exit Selhurst Park at the end of the season, forcing the Eagles to search the market for a new manager.
Kobbie Mainoo future
While Kobbie Mainoo's playing time was restricted under Amorim, it seems Carrick regards him as an integral part of United's future plans. The 20-year-old midfielder has featured in just 13 league matches this season due to fierce competition for places, and was reportedly linked with a loan switch to Napoli earlier this month.

However, it's now said that United are considering extending his contract until 2031, as Carrick begins to give him more regular playing time to aid his development. Sky Sports News suggests that the Red Devils are planning to offer Mainoo a lucrative deal in recognition of his value to the club, with expectations that he will play a significant role in the coming years.
Investing in Olympiakos talent
According to the Mail, United view Christos Mouzakitis as a medium-term investment to bolster their midfield. The 19-year-old Greek player has made a strong impression at Olympiakos since breaking into the club's youth ranks in 2024.
Given his current club's preference to keep him until the end of the 2025/26 season, it could be another deal to revisit in the summer.
