Roy Keane dismissed Micah Richards' suggestion that Michael Carrick could be the right choice for a permanent head coach role at Manchester United, labelling it as "being silly." The Reds secured an impressive 3-2 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday evening, in a game filled with excitement.
Carrick remains undefeated in his first two games in charge of United, having taken over temporarily until the end of the season following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim earlier this month.
However, former club captain, Keane, is sceptical about the idea of the 44-year-old taking on the role permanently at Old Trafford.
During Sky Sports' Super Sunday coverage after the match, Richards posed the question: "Would you give it Carrick then now?" This led to Keane giving a blunt response, saying: "The job? No, you're being silly now.
"Yeah, two great performances...anyone can win two games, it's what he does at the end of the season. Even if they do get into fourth, I still wouldn't be convinced that he's the man for the job. Absolutely not.
"I still think they need a bigger and better manager. But he's got the opportunity - what a chance it is for him, and do you know what, he's taking it so fair play to him."
Carrick, on the other hand, was much more optimistic after the game, telling reporters: "I'm enjoying it. It's a fantastic position to be in. What happens next I'm not going to be answering it every week. I'm enjoying it and I'll continue to do what I can."
United enjoyed a remarkable night in north London, climbing to fourth in the Premier League table and moving closer to securing European qualification following their 3-2 victory over league leaders Arsenal.
Arsenal started strongly, applying intense pressure on the visitors from the get-go. Lisandro Martinez unfortunately scored an own goal 29 minutes into the match while attempting a clearance in his six-yard box, inadvertently setting the stage for what would become a high-stakes, drama-filled encounter.
However, Arsenal's lead was short-lived. Roughly eight minutes later, Bryan Mbeumo intercepted Declan Rice's errant pass back to David Raya, swiftly rounding the goalkeeper before slotting into an open net.
Five minutes into the second half, Patrick Dorgu found the back of the net with a stunning volley from the edge of the box, giving United a 2-1 lead they hoped to maintain for the rest of the match. Mikel Merino managed to equalise with about six minutes of regular time remaining, but his efforts were ultimately undone just three minutes later.
Matheus Cunha secured the victory for United with a beautifully curled shot that spiralled past Raya. Carrick's United will next face Fulham at home in a week's time.
