The search for Manchester United's next permanent manager took a dramatic turn just hours after their dramatic win at the Emirates Stadium at the weekend. The weekend's curtain call fixture saw the Red Devil's secure a late winner against Premier League leaders Arsenal to throw the title race wide open again while United leapfrog into the Champions League places for the first time this season.
The visitors bounced back to a 2-1 lead early in the second-half after a Lisandro Martinez own goal opened the scoring before Bryan Mbeumo equalised before half-time and Patrick Dorgu's effort after some brilliant build-up play gave United the lead in the 50th minute.
Arsenal's Mikel Merino thought he rescued his side with a point late on in the match until Matheus Cunha came off the bench to secure the wining goal in dramatic fashion. A return to the top four places will be warmly welcomed by the fans who had to endure a torrid Premier League campaign last season where they finished 15th and spent most of the season in the bottom half of the table.
The win now puts Michael Carrick's name in the hot seat as the firm favourite as the former midfielder sees his name cut from 10/3 to 6/4 odds with the bookies after a solid start to his interim role. With back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time since October - including last week's Manchester Derby win at Old Trafford - it provides a positive spin on Carrick taking over the job on a full-time basis.
William Hill spokesperson Lee Phelps said: “In beating both Man City and Arsenal, Michael Carrick has given the red side of Manchester something to cheer about. There will no doubt be plenty of United fans that are close to being convinced that Carrick is the man for the permanent role and we’re edging that way in the betting too.
“Sunday’s gutsy win against the Gunners has seen Carrick’s odds of being United boss for the start of the 2026/27 season plummet to 6/4 from 10/3, meaning he’s now the clear favourite. Oliver Glasner is out to 4/1 from 5/2 as a result, while Gareth Southgate is quietly sitting third in the betting at 8/1.”
The two aforementioned names will mean United do not have to spend a penny in compensation fees as Glasner announced his intention of leaving Crystal Palace at the end of the season after losing in the FA Cup to non-league Macclesfield and seeing captain Marc Guehi sign for Manchester City.
Other names mentioned include Aston Villa's Unai Emery who has guided his side to just four points of Arsenal while former Brighton & Hove Albion coach Roberto De Zerbi is also included in the odds market with both coaches at 20/1.
