Failed bid - Manchester United transfer blow confirmed as target completes move to Premier League rival

Man Utd bid for the player but he has opted to join Chelsea instead during the January transfer window.

Manchester United have missed out on the signing of Yisa Alao after he completed his move to Chelsea in the January transfer window.

United were one of several clubs that placed a bid to sign the Sheffield Wednesday full-back this month, but the 17-year-old has decided to join Chelsea instead. Alao made his Championship debut earlier this month and featured five times for the Yorkshire club at first-team level.

It is understood Chelsea will pay an initial fee of £500,00 for the teenage defender, but that figure could double to almost £1 million if a series of add-ons are met. Alao will initially feature for Chelsea at academy level but has technically become the first signing of Liam Rosenior's tenure as head coach. United’s bid for the teenager was an interesting one, given they already have young left-backs Patrick Dorgu and Harry Amass on their books, while they also signed fellow teenage left-back Diego Leon last the summer.

United miss out on Alao after failed bid

Manchester United and Liverpool both made bids to sign Yisa Alao in the January transfer window, but he has officially completed his move to Chelsea instead.

A Sheffield Wednesday statement released on Monday read: “Sheffield Wednesday can confirm that Yisa Alao has completed a permanent transfer to Premier League Chelsea for an undisclosed fee.

“Yisa has developed through the Owls’ academy system and was offered a professional contract. Chelsea have presented him with an excellent opportunity, and after careful consideration Yisa has chosen to take the next step in his career.

“Having joined Wednesday at Under-7s level, the full-back graduated to make his senior debut in our Carabao Cup first round tie at Bolton in August. He posted his first Championship start against Portsmouth at Hillsborough earlier this month and in total, the 17-year-old has made five first-team appearances.”

In their own statement, Chelsea wrote: “Chelsea is pleased to announce the signing of Yisa Alao, with the left-back agreeing a contract with the Blues until 2028. The 17-year-old came through Sheffield Wednesday’s academy and made his senior debut for the Owls in August. Alao has since played four more games, starting Wednesday’s recent FA Cup tie against Brentford and Championship match against Portsmouth. Welcome to Chelsea, Yisa!”
