Marseille president Pablo Longoria has suggested that Mason Greenwood could be sold due to the financial 'difficulties' clubs can face, despite insisting they are happy with the former Manchester United forward. The 24-year-old completed the £27million move to the Ligue 1 side from Old Trafford in the summer of 2024 following a brief loan spell at Getafe.
During negotiations, United secured several favourable clauses that could boost their finances in the future. If Marseille decide to sell Greenwood, a significant portion of any profit made on the deal would be owed back to the Reds.
A new report by Spanish newspaper AS, claims that when United opted to sell Greenwood permanently and Getafe failed to secure his signature, the La Liga side were handed a 20 per cent clause that would activate on any profit United earn from Greenwood's future departure from Marseille.
Now, it seems Getafe have placed that 20 per cent clause on the market as they attempt to ease their current financial pressures. For United, the decision should be straightforward: buy back the clause quick.
While Marseille are pleased with the player's development at the Orange Velodrome, Longoria admitted: "We are happy. He's performing and the numbers, the talent is there.
"At the same time, it's also if we are on the same page, it's also a moment to analyse, as well the financial situation and ecosystem of French football, knowing all the difficulties.
"But I think if we are all aligned on Mason he can still have a future here.

"I think that it can be as well for him necessary because we are seeing that Mason this season is not the Mason of last season.
"I expect that he's continuing to grow up and I would like to help him as well, you know, being better each day."
Atletico Madrid have been linked with an £87m move for the Englishman, a deal that would hand United a substantial windfall.
By buying out Getafe's 20 per cent stake, the Reds would secure an even larger share of the profit Marseille are expected to make.
Greenwood still has three and a half years remaining on his Marseille contract, and it is highly likely the French club will look to cash in on him at some stage.
