But Michael Carrick was appointed interim until the end of the season, and in the space of a week, he has beaten Manchester City and Arsenal to lift United into the top four in the Premier League table.

Ineos insist that Michael Carrick is still only in charge until the end of the season, but he is quickly putting Ruben Amorim and his records to shame.

Michael Carrick wins back-to-back games at first attempt

Amorim’s record in the Premier League was nothing short of atrocious. United finished a record-low 15th in his first season in charge.

United were only three points off the top five when Amorim was finally sacked, but no supporter can argue that Carrick has not made immediate improvements in his first two weeks.

Carrick achieved it in his first two, and he did it against the top two-ranked teams in the division.

The 3-2 win over Arsenal on Sunday was the first time the Gunners have scored first and not gone on to win. Carrick’s United showed incredible spirit and togetherness, and now confidence is building.

Michael Carrick’s biggest challenge is consistency

Under Amorim, United were also able to produce big performances against big sides, just think back to the win at Anfield this season.

Carrick has not put a foot wrong since arriving back in Manchester, and back-to-back wins lay a brilliant foundation for United to build on and push for Champions League qualification.

With 15 games remaining under Carrick, United are in the driving seat to qualify for the Champions League, but they will need to show consistency.

In the games against City and Arsenal, United thrived as underdogs. Next Sunday, Fulham travel to Old Trafford and for the first time, Carrick will be expected to win.

That is a new challenge entirely, and it is up to Carrick to prove to Ineos he can string together a positive run of results.
