Ant & Dec shut down Roy Keane over Eddie Howe x Newcastle United comments

Ant & Dec appeared on a podcast alongside former Manchester United captain Roy Keane.

Anthony McPartlin jokingly told Roy Keane that Eddie Howe is “happy where he is” after backing him to become the Manchester United manager.

Michael Carrick has worked wonders in his opening two games as interim boss at Old Trafford - beating Manchester City and Arsenal. However, the Wallsend native has no assurances about being given the Red Devils job on a permanent basis.

Speaking a week ago, former Man United captain Keane backed Howe as a potential Ruben Amorim successor. Ironically, the Toon boss is facing increasing pressure at St James’ Park due to recent Premier League results.

What Roy Keane said about Eddie Howe

“I'd go with Eddie Howe,” Keane said a fortnight ago. “I like him. I like what he's done. He's managed a lot of games. When his teams are at it, they'll play good football. He has his critics, but I like what he's done at Newcastle.

"He's managed seven or 800 games. He's still a young man. I love his calmness. Maybe Man United need a little bit of that.

"We've seen with our previous (appointments), we like people with emotions, but he's got that calmness. The job he's done at Newcastle, Champions League and winning a cup, I'd be happy to see him go in there."

Ant & Dec respond

Confronting the Man United legend on The Overlap, Geordie duo Ant & Dec had a bone to pick over his Howe comments. Ant quipped: “I heard you talking about Eddie Howe (becoming Manchester United manager) the other day, he’s happy where he is. I love him, we love him… what you said about him being calm, that really helps you as a fan not be too up and down about performances.

“If Eddie is alright about it, he’s got a good temperament, the fans aren’t shouting for him to go. You’re just like ‘Alright, yeah’.”

Declan Donnelly - the other half of the duo - was also asked whether Newcastle can take the next step under PIF. He responded: “I think it will (kick on to the next level). It will take time and there’s obviously the PSR thing that always hangs around Newcastle, that we can’t spend as much as we would like to.

“I’m hearing that they’ve just invested in a new training complex, which they need if they want to be that big club in Europe. All of their decisions are carefully considered and they don’t just spend money willy-nilly. It has to be a sustainable investment.”
