Rio Ferdinand calls out Roy Keane over 'mad' Michael Carrick claim at Man United

Michael Carrick’s perfect start as Manchester United interim head coach has certainly split opinion on what Ineos should do in the summer.

When Ineos decided to make a change of management, it was made clear that Michael Carrick would get 17 games in charge and then be replaced by a permanent appointment in the summer.

However, Michael Carrick has now recorded back-to-back victories over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, so it is hard to see how United could let him move on.

After wins vs City and Arsenal… should Michael Carrick get the Man Utd permanent job?

Jason Wilcox wants United to qualify for the Champions League, and Carrick has already helped United into fourth in the Premier League table.

Following the 3-2 win over Arsenal, talk has resumed around whether or not Carrick should be kept on and United legends Rio Ferdinand and Roy Keane have very different opinions.

After United’s win at The Emirates, Keane said Carrick should not be appointed as the permanent head coach even if he wins every game between now and the end of the season.

Straight after the appointment was made official, Gary Neville insisted Carrick cannot stay regardless of his results.

But Ferdinand has a very different opinion, and he has called out Keane on his comments after the match.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, he said: “The disrespect is unbelievable. For someone to say, no matter what this person does, he doesn’t deserve to be given the keys to Man United.

“On what grounds are you saying that? That’s mad talk.”

Keane and Neville have both gone bold with their comments on Carrick, but it is difficult to see why their stance is so stubborn.

There are as many as 12 managers linked to United ahead of the summer, but no real candidate is sticking out to supporters as a clear favourite.

It is ironic that Keane and Neville have led the charge for a United manager to have the club’s “DNA”, yet appear so against Carrick as a candidate.

If Carrick continues as he has started – and that is a big if – then it would be ridiculous to not give him an opportunity in the head coach role.

The players adore Carrick’s coaching, and he clearly has a strong connection with supporters. If United find themselves comfortably in the Champions League spots, Keane may have to complete a U-turn on his comments around Carrick’s future.
