Cole Palmer has left Manchester United on red alert after putting his Chelsea future in doubt. The England playmaker is reportedly unsettled in West London two-and-a-half years after his arrival from Manchester City.

Having been one of the Premier League’s star performers since then, clubs in the English top flight will no doubt be sitting up and taking notice. Chief among those is United, who could yet make a sensational move for the playmaker.

Palmer would also be open to a stunning switch to Old Trafford, having supported the Red Devils as a boy. In even better news for United, it is suggested that he would not even consider a return to Manchester City.

And while Chelsea would likely resist any approach for Palmer from their Premier League rivals, there’s no doubt that he would represent a blockbuster signing for United. Here’s how they could potentially line-up should they seal his services:

Let’s start exactly where Palmer would be. It would not be outrageous to suggest that he could be a direct replacement for Bruno Fernandes.

The Portuguese midfielder is set to consider his future at Old Trafford after the World Cup and with long-standing interest in him from Saudi Arabia, it would not be surprising to see him depart. That would of course be damaging for United but the signing of Palmer would help alleviate some of that pain.

Having spent heavily on their attack in the most recent summer transfer window, the current Chelsea star could well be surrounded by a number of those signings. Benjamin Sesko would lead the line ahead of him, with Bryan Mbeumo and the weekend’s matchwinner Matheus Cunha on either flank.

Moving into midfield, there could yet be another major signing. A number of candidates have been identified by Red Devils chiefs, with Brighton’s Carlos Baleba right at the top of the list.

He would slot alongside academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo, who has returned to the side under new boss Michael Carrick. He now appears set to stay at Old Trafford.

Moving into defence, it could have a very familiar look to it. Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire appear to be the club’s preferred pairing at the moment, albeit Matthijs de Ligt appears likely to come back in when fit.

When it comes to the full-backs, Diogo Dalot looks likely to claim the right-back berth, while Patrick Dorgu is finally appearing to match the expectations of a Manchester United player.

Senne Lammens only signed for the Red Devils in the summer and is expected to be the club’s number one goalkeeper for some time.
