Manchester United could have the perfect gift for Cole Palmer, with his preferred shirt number, if he completes a stunning move to the club - as has been speculated.

The England attacking midfielder has become one of the standout players in the Premier League over the last two seasons, since completing a move from Manchester City to Chelsea in summer 2023. In his time at Stamford Bridge he has scored 48 goals and provided a further 29 assists in 110 appearances.

This season has, however, been impacted by an ongoing groin injury.

Over the last week, reports have emerged linking Palmer with a sensational move to United. It's reported that the England international is unsettled in London and is feeling homesick.

The 23-year-old grew up as a boyhood United fan, too, but came up through the ranks at rivals City. He broke into the first-team under Pep Guardiola in the 2021/22 season, before making his move to Chelsea just over a year later.

The Blues are not likely to give up their star man without a fight with reports suggesting that Palmer is considered as one of the "untouchables" who the club have no plans to sell. That stance could possibly change, if Palmer really pushes for a move.

Should United make a move, then the perfect welcome gift could come in the squad number that he is given. At this time, the club's No.20 shirt is available for any new signings.

That was the number first worn by Palmer in his first two seasons at Chelsea. He now wears the No.10 shirt there, though, after changing things up ahead of the current campaign.

That number at United is worn by summer signing Matheus Cunha, who is not likely to give up the shirt easily. But the No.20 has been available since the end of last season, when it was given up by Diogo Dalot.

Speaking about the reports surrounding Palmer last week, Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior seemed to brush them off. "I've had numerous conversations with Cole and he seems very happy to be here," he said.

"He's a huge part in our long-term plans here. My job and the club's job is to get him into a situation where he can consistently perform to the level he wants to.

"There was frustration in the Brentford game. We need to look after him and that's why I didn't involve him in the last game."
