Wolves have expressed an interest in signing Angel Gomes from Marseille this month.
That’s according to Foot Mercato. There is a distinct possibility that Gomes could pack his bags and depart France. A return to England could be on the cards, where the 25-year-old played for Manchester United.
Foot Mercato explain that Marseille’s midfield is now full after the arrival of Ethan Nwaneri and Quinten Timber. That’s potentially bad news for Gomes, who arrived on a free transfer from Lille in the summer.
That was seen as a shrewd capture, but he fell victim to Roberto de Zerbi’s recurring changes. The Italian has been struggling to find a midfield partnership he likes and that’s seen Gomes fall out of favour. His future at the club now seems bleak.
The French club have made it clear that they’re not opposed to him leaving. Now a first viable option has emerged.
Wolves are interested in the midfielder, potentially as a replacement for Jean-Ricner Bellegarde. He is being followed by Besiktas. Wolves have also loaned out Marshall Munetsi this month and need reinforcements in midfield.
Gomes could be that reinforcement, if he agrees to the move. He has some Premier League experience after previously playing at Manchester United before his move to Lille.
He’s also played for England and could perhaps be tempted by a return to England to give his international hopes a boost ahead of the World Cup. That’s just speculation on our part, though.
Given the midfielder has been linked with clubs higher up the Premier League before now, Wolves might have work to do to convince the 25-year-old. It seems, though, that they’ve shown an interest, nonetheless.
Foot Mercato’s tweet states Wolves want a loan with a purchase obligation should they stay up.
