Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has spoken of his delight at the turnaround at Old Trafford under the guidance of Michael Carrick - and he admits it comes as no surprise. The former midfielder was first-team coach at United when McTominay was at the club.

He has now taken over at head coach until the end of the season, with his first two games in charge bringing back the feel good factor at the club. A 2-0 win against neighbours Manchester City was followed by a 3-2 away victory over table-toppers Arsenal on Sunday.

The two results have lifted United up into fourth place in the Premier League standings, a position they will look to keep hold of between now and the end of the season.

Speaking about United in a Napoli press conference, McTominay said: "Michael Carrick is such a great guy. I've got so much love and respect for him.

"Those two results vs Man City and Arsenal have been amazing, especially for me to watch. So I'm very, very proud of all the players and long may it continue."

McTominay added: "It doesn't surprise me. I wish him [Carrick] all the best. The first matches have been great, let's hope it continues like that."

The comments show just how closely the Scotland international follows his former club and comes just days after the club were instructed to make a move to bring him back to Old Trafford by former striker Giuseppe Rossi.

"It's all up to the coach," he said. "I feel that's all up in the air... You can't really go out and start buying players if you know the coaching situation yet.

"I always say McTominay because he would actually be a good player for Manchester United at this moment."

McTominay left United in the summer of 2024, completing a £25million move to Serie A team Napoli. He has since gone from strength to strength, earning plaudits for his performances in Italy.

Such were his performances last season in helping the club secure the Serie A title, he was ranked at number 18 in the race for the 2025 Ballon d'Or.

So far this season, he has made 31 appearances in all competitions, scoring nine goals and providing a further four assists. Four of those goals have come in seven appearances in the Champions League.
