Man United identify Bundesliga midfielder as Wharton alternative

Manchester United caretaker head coach Michael Carrick will hope to continue the remarkable start to his tenure when his side host Fulham on Sunday afternoon.

The former England international has so far masterminded victories over Manchester City and Arsenal since being appointed on a deal until the end of the season.

His predecessor, Ruben Amorim, had taken charge of more than 30 games before overseeing consecutive Premier League matches, but Carrick has achieved the feat within just two games.

United currently sit fourth in the top flight standings and, while the club claim that he is only in the role until the end of the season as things stand, a continuation of the Red Devils’ current form will only make Carrick more likely to be appointed United boss on a permanent basis.

In the meantime, it appears that the Manchester giants have identified a Bundesliga midfielder as a possible alternative to one of their top transfer targets.

As per SportsBoom, Manchester United are keeping tabs on Freiburg star Johan Manzambi as a possible alternative to Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.

The report claims that the Swiss midfielder has emerged on the radar of the Red Devils, as they consider possible targets in case they miss out on Palace star Wharton.

It is claimed that United’s Premier League rivals, Chelsea and Arsenal, have also been monitoring the young Swiss midfielder, who has impressed interested clubs with his performances in the German top flight.

Despite significant interest in the player, the report does suggest that Freiburg’s asking price for the 20-year-old could prove an obstacle as and when interested parties attempt to lure the player away from the Bundesliga.

Manzambi is under contract at his current club until the end of the 2029/30 season, and Freiburg are said to therefore be unwilling to even consider offers below £45 million.
