Gordon Hill advises ex-Man Utd players to get off Michael Carrick’s back, ‘a job that we all…’

Gordon Hill has called on former Manchester United players to get off Michael Carrick’s back as he attempts to salvage the Premier League campaign for the club in his temporary role as head coach.

Michael Carrick has taken charge of two matches since becoming Manchester United head coach over two weeks ago.

Roy Keane was quick to criticise Carrick’s decision to add Jonny Evans to his coaching staff, after the former United defender left the club as Loans Manager a few weeks before Ruben Amorim’s dismissal.

There were other criticisms levelled at the team, too, which United fans found unhelpful as Carrick stepped into the job. Lisandro Martinez was targeted with personal criticism from Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt.

This has led to debate over whether ex-players should be more complimentary or at least supportive of the current team, opting for a more careful approach when criticising the club’s efforts.

Broadcasters will always push sensationalism and protect their pundits for being ‘honest’ at all times, but viewers aren’t listening to Jamie Carragher dig into Liverpool players with personal insults.

They’ve all failed to deliver the Premier League title, which is the bread and butter at Old Trafford.

That should tell everyone how difficult a task it is to make United successful. For instance, Jose Mourinho once said coming runners-up in the Premier League with the Reds was his greatest achievement.

Former United winger Gordon Hill took to X to call on other ex-players to rally behind Carrick, get off his back and let him have a go at the biggest job in football.

Hill wrote: “My answer to the former players I leave him [Carrick] alone to do a job that we all would love. I hope you get a good crack at it Michael, **** what others are saying and the best of British to you.”

Carrick needs all the support he can get at United and the same applies to the players in the dressing room, tasked with multiple battles for the remainder of the season because they are trying to make up for lost ground.

Hopefully, other former players take note of Hill’s advice because they will become unpopular with fans otherwise. It would also make for better podcasts and television.

Gordon Hill played under two Man Utd managers

‘Merlin’, as he was affectionately known, played under two managers during his time at Old Trafford between 1975 and 1978.

Tommy Docherty signed Hill from Millwall in November 1975 for £70,000. He became a focal point on the wing in a vibrant side renowned for their attacking football.

Hill won the 1977 FA Cup final against Liverpool under Docherty to end their treble hopes.

After Docherty was sacked that summer, Dave Sexton became manager and preferred a more disciplined and structured approach.

Sexton sold Hill to Derby County in April 1978 for £250,000.
