Michael Carrick already knows what the only answer is to Paul Scholes' 'weird' Man Utd claim – opinion

Paul Scholes’ position was firm on one thing surrounding Michael Carrick at Old Trafford and his fellow Manchester United legend should hold the same view as him.

Michael Carrick has been installed as interim head coach until the end of the 2025-26 campaign after Ruben Amorim was dismissed as Manchester United manager.

The 44-year-old United legend returned to Old Trafford earlier this month and Carrick has already created a major buzz at the club after two matches in charge.

Carrick’s first match in charge of the Red Devils ended with Man Utd’s stunning 2-0 win over Manchester City at Old Trafford in the last Manchester derby of the season.

Man Utd’s sensational performance against Manchester City was only the starting point for Carrick when it came to a change in mood among Red Devils supporters this season.

Carrick was in the Emirates dugout on Sunday and the former England midfielder watched on as United sealed a superb 3-2 win over Arsenal in the Premier League.

Paul Scholes has already ruled out one offer that Michael Carrick should take up after his Man Utd run

Michael Carrick has provided Ineos and Red Devils co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe with breathing room to secure the permanent successor to Ruben Amorim at the club.

Ineos are not expected to announce the seventh permanent United manager in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era until after the end of the 2025-26 Premier League season.

Carrick is expected to be out of the running for the permanent head coach role, but there have been suggestions he could become a candidate himself if his interim spell defies all expectations.

Speaking after United’s 3-2 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates, Paul Scholes ruled out the idea of Carrick becoming part of the coaching staff for the next United boss.

“No, I think that would be weird,” he said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast.

“He’s had three years at Middlesbrough being a manager and I don’t think he’d want to do that.”

Michael Carrick should know there is only one answer to Paul Scholes’ response about a potential Man Utd coaching role

If the permanent head coach role is not offered to Carrick, the Man Utd legend should make the decision to leave Old Trafford instead of downgrading his status.

Carrick has already earned his stripes in the United coaching staff during his time under former Red Devils managers Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho.

It would feel like one step backwards for Carrick to become a coach again, especially under the next permanent Man Utd manager ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

Carrick suffered a setback in his first managerial spell last summer after the former Middlesbrough head coach was sacked from his role at the Riverside Stadium.

However, the former United and England midfielder’s spell at Old Trafford should be more than enough of a confidence boost for him to explore managerial roles in the future.
