Liverpool have the chance to freshen up their ranks before the end of the January transfer window
Liverpool are positioned in sixth place in the Premier League table behind Arsenal, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Manchester United and Chelsea. They are just outside the top four after their 3-2 defeat away at AFC Bournemouth last time out. Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai got their goals against the Cherries but they weren’t able to get anything from the game.
The Reds are back in action in the Champions League on Wednesday night at home to Qarabag. They then return to their league duties this weekend. The Merseyside giants play Newcastle United at Anfield on Saturday night.
Liverpool should rekindle interest in Manchester City attacker Omar Marmoush
According to CaughtOffside, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has given Omar Marmoush his approval to leave before the end of the January transfer window with Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur credited with an interest. Liverpool were linked with a move for the attacker before his £59million switch to the Etihad Stadium around 12 months ago. Therefore, they should now rekindle their pursuit of him before the deadline on Monday 2nd February.
Marmoush, 26, would give the Reds more competition and depth at the top end of the pitch. In addition, he would inject more quality into their attacking department. He could battle it out with the likes of Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo for a place in Arne Slot’s starting XI.
The Egypt international, who has 46 caps to his name, may feel he has a point to prove amid his lack of starts at City under Pep Guardiola. He was snapped up by the North West side in January on a long-term deal and has since made 42 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with 10 goals. His future is now up in the air between and he may well head out the exit door for a fresh start somewhere else.
Liverpool should take gamble on Omar Marmoush
Liverpool need to start thinking about life with Salah with his contract up in 2027. It remains to be seen at this stage whether he will still be with them come next term. Therefore, the Reds should start considering long-term replacements.
Marmoush is someone who has pace to burn and would inject more energy into Slot’s team. Prior to his switch to City, he caught the eye playing in Germany for both Wolfsburg and Stuttgart. He fired 37 goals in 67 outings for the latter to earn his big money transfer.
He initially adapted well to life in England and found the net on eight occasions in his first 25 outings. Marmoush has found it hard to find his shooting boots this term though amid strong competition for places with his current club. Therefore, a departure and a change of scene would do him good now.
Speaking after their win over Wolves recently, Guardiola said: “Last season when he arrived for three months he was unbelievable; without him it would not be possible to qualify for the Champions League and reach the FA Cup final.
“He’s a special player, not old ,not young but he has margin to improve. His dynamic energy and runs are really good “I see him more as a striker not a proper winger. He’s a guy for transition actions.”
