Manchester United have been handed an update on Harry Maguire’s future at the club. Maguire’s contract at Old Trafford is due to expire in the summer, and there is speculation over whether the defender will put pen to paper on an extension over the next few months.

United opted to activate the one-year option in Maguire’s contract last summer, which saw the England international remain at the club for a further 12 months. The decision was confirmed by United’s former head coach, Ruben Amorim, in January last year.

Maguire joined United in the summer of 2019 from Leicester City in a deal worth £80million, which, to this day, remains a club-record fee for a centre-back.

Maguire has spent a large portion of the season on the sidelines with injury, which has restricted the experienced defender to just 12 appearances across all competitions this term.

In his 10 appearances in the Premier League this season, the 32-year-old has only been handed five starts for United, with two of those coming in the wins over Manchester City and Arsenal.

Interim head coach Michael Carrick has named Maguire in the starting line-up in both of United’s victories against City and the Gunners, and now a fresh update has emerged about the defender’s future.

According to The Athletic, Carrick is a big fan of Maguire as a player and a person – sharing the same view as United’s former manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Maguire at United, with the report going on to claim that whether or not an extension is agreed will depend on what the club offers the defender in terms of salary and length of the contract.

Maguire has already spoken about working with Carrick since United appointed the former midfielder as the club’s interim head coach.

"Really impressed," Maguire told Sky Sports ahead of Carrick’s first match in charge against City earlier this month.

"I know Carras from before, and I spoke really highly of him. He was a magnificent coach when he was here under Ole. He's got great ideas, he speaks really well, and tactically he's really good.

"Now he's had a lot of experience at Middlesbrough as a manager, and I'm sure he's going to come here and implement his ideas. He's a legend of the club, and I'm sure the fans will get right behind him, but I must say, with him and all of his coaching staff, I've been really impressed this week."
