What Luis Enrique told Andy Mitten about managing in the Premier League amid Man United links

One of the several managers linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer is current PSG boss Luis Enrique.

Ineos are under huge pressure to get the managerial appointment right at Manchester United this summer.

Michael Carrick has 15 games remaining in his interim head coach spell, but with wins over Manchester City and Arsenal in his first two matches, he has put his name in the hat for the permanent job.

However, Gary Neville insists Carrick should leave in the summer regardless of his results as United need more experience in the managerial hot seat.

Luis Enrique’s style of play makes him perfect for United, and he has been successful everywhere he has been. Ineos must hope that a Premier League switch is tempting for the Spaniard.

Luis Enrique’s stance on managing in the Premier League

Enrique already boasts an incredible managerial CV having taken charge of Barcelona, Spain and Paris Saint-Germain. He won the Champions League with Barcelona and PSG.

Speaking on the Talk of the Devils podcast, Andy Mitten revealed that he got United in touch with Enrique in 2022 regarding the manager’s job.

”I put him in touch with Manchester United in April 2022 because my opinion of him couldn’t be higher as a coach,” Mitten said.

“I know someone who knows him very well, and I made some phone calls, and Luis Enrique was the coach of Spain and it was in a World Cup year.

“I interviewed him at his house. Incredible character, absolutely top grade. Two of the best hours of my life and as a human he is an incredible person.

“I’m not surprised that he has done very well as a coach. I’ve got no current inclination as to whether he wants to manage in the Premier League. But he certainly wanted to at one point. When he stopped playing, he put a cap on and sort of travelled around going to different games and stuff like that.

“Back to April 2022, Manchester United were already quite far down the road with Erik Ten Hag and that’s the line that they went with.”

Luis Enrique must be Ineos top choice in the summer

As things stand, it would be incredibly harsh to discard Carrick as the top managerial option for United.

He has simply not put a foot wrong since making his return to the club, and he has already put United in the driving seat to qualify for the Champions League.

Consistency is now Carrick’s biggest challenge. If Ineos are going to make a change in the summer, it should only be for a world-class coach who guarantees success, and that is Enrique.

Enrique is a proven winner, and he has the trophy cabinet to prove it. At PSG, he has cleared out the egos in the squad and built a powerhouse of a team that went on to win their first Champions League trophy.

His style of play is to look forward, pass quickly and hurt teams on the counter-attack. While Enrique does lack the Premier League experience that Ineos may be looking for, his reputation around Europe speaks for itself.
