Unai Emery has all but confirmed that Douglas Luiz has returned to Aston Villa.

The midfielder has been brought in following a series of injuries to Villa’s midfield, with Youri Tielemans the latest to be sidelined long-term. The Belgian was forced off late in Sunday’s clash against Newcastle United due to an ankle injury.

John McGinn is also currently out with a knee injury, while Boubacar Kamara is expected to miss the remainder of the season with a knee problem of his own.

Ahead of Villa’s Europa League tie against RB Salzburg, Emery provided an update on the club’s midfield options.

“We know about McGinn, Tielemans and Kamara. Kamara is a long time, not playing again this season,” Emery explained.

“McGinn is six to eight weeks out. Tielemans is eight to 10 weeks out. After those updates on those players, we need to manage central midfielders in the matches we are going to play.

“We are involving Douglas Luiz for this season. Hopefully, we can keep him consistently this season.

“Barkley is so close to joining us again. George Hemmings is a young player, knowing tactically what we need. He has huge potential, and maybe this is a moment he can help us.”
