Manchester United have received a fresh update regarding Harry Maguire's future at the club. The 32-year-old's deal at Old Trafford is set to run out in the summer, and there is uncertainty over whether the defender will get an extension in the coming months.

United chose to activate the 12-month option in Maguire's contract last summer, ensuring the England international stayed at the club for an additional year. The move was confirmed by United's former head coach, Ruben Amorim, in January last year.

Maguire arrived at United in the summer of 2019 from Leicester City in an £80million transfer, which remains the club's record fee for a central defender to this day.

Maguire has endured lengthy spells on the sidelines with injury this season, limiting the defender to merely 12 outings across all competitions this campaign.

Across his 10 Premier League appearances this season, the 32-year-old has been given just five starts for United, with two of those coming in the triumphs over Manchester City and Arsenal.

Interim head coach Michael Carrick has selected Maguire in his starting line-up for both of United's wins against City and the Gunners, and now a new development has surfaced concerning the defender's future.

According to The Athletic, Carrick holds Maguire in high regard both as a footballer and individual – echoing the same sentiment as United's former manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

It's unclear what lies ahead for Maguire at United, with the report suggesting that whether an extension is finalised will depend on what the club puts to the defender regarding wages and contract duration.

Maguire has previously discussed working alongside Carrick since United brought in the former midfielder as the club's interim head coach.

"Really impressed," Maguire said in an interview with Sky Sports before Carrick’s first match in charge against City earlier this month.

"I know Carras from before, and I spoke really highly of him. He was a magnificent coach when he was here under Ole. He's got great ideas, he speaks really well, and tactically he's really good.

"Now he's had a lot of experience at Middlesbrough as a manager, and I'm sure he's going to come here and implement his ideas. He's a legend of the club, and I'm sure the fans will get right behind him, but I must say, with him and all of his coaching staff, I've been really impressed this week."
