**Man City have made enquiries about Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.**
Writing in his _GiveMeSport_ Newsletter, Jacobs named Pep Guardiola’s side as one of four clubs who are interested in signing the England international.
“I think plenty of clubs are anticipating Wharton as a viable target for this summer. Manchester United, Manchester City and Bayern Munich have all made calls. Wharton was also a name put forward by some senior members of Spurs’ recruitment team.”
There had been claims that Liverpool had agreed personal terms with Wharton but Jacobs said those reports were “wide of the mark”.
Why are City interested in the midfielder?
------------------------------------------
Captain Bernardo Silva has less than six months left on his contract at the Etihad, and it is looking increasingly likely that he will depart the club after nine years.
Wharton is not a like-for-like replacement as he prefers to play in deeper-lying positions but he is in the mould of Pep Guardiola-type [**midfielder**](https://mancitynews.com/man-city-transfer-news-elliot-anderson-2/), who can keep possession and progress the ball up the pitch into the final third.
Guardiola has long admired the player
-------------------------------------
Speaking before City faced Crystal Palace in a league game back in April, manager Pep Guardiola was pretty open about his appreciation for Wharton:
“An excellent holding midfielder. He was in the national team already. The impact has been really good, coming from the Championship to the Premier League, brilliant left foot, a really good player.”
Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Guardiola is pressing Director of Football Hugo Viana to sign Wharton, but if Jacobs remarks are to be believed, it seems the Cityzens have registered the interest. It could be a transfer to keep an eye on ahead of the summer.
