Manchester United will reportedly hold contract talks with Kobbie Mainoo later this year. The United academy graduate has come in from the cold under interim head coach Michael Carrick and the club are understood to be very happy with his impact in recent weeks.

Mainoo struggled for regular game time under former head coach Ruben Amorim, making the majority of his appearances from the bench this season. It was quite the fall from grace for the academy talent, who started for England during their European Championship final defeat to Spain in Euro 2024.

The 20-year-old appeared as though he could be on his way out of Old Trafford, having gone from an 'untouchable' to a fringe player in less than a year. Chelsea and Napoli were two of the clubs reportedly keen on signing Mainoo, who had asked to leave his boyhood club in the summer.

United have, thus far, been unable to agree on new terms with Mainoo, who scored in the FA Cup Final win over Man City in 2024.

The young midfielder had signed a contract in 2023 after breaking into the first team set-up and had held talks with the club to bring his wages in line with more senior players.

However, neither the club nor player were able to agree new terms. Nevertheless, Mainoo has found himself back in the starting XI under Carrick and the club have been impressed by his performances.

Fabrizio Romano claims United will look to negotiate a new contract later this year, with Mainoo's current deal set to expire in June 2027, though the club do have the option of another year.

Carrick has lauded the impact of Mainoo since returning to the starting XI and said: "This club needs young players coming through.

"They are the foundation of the club - they understand what it means - and for the supporters as well. It's something we need to keep building on and Kobbie is a prime example.

"I was working with him at 13 or 14 when I was doing my (coaching) badges. To come through so quickly, have such a rapid rise and play in some big games at such a young age shows a lot of quality in terms of his character and being able to handle it."

As things currently stand, there have been no fresh talks to extend Mainoo's deal, though Amorim's departure could change things for the United star.

However, the club reportedly have a lot of work to do with the player also having issues with some of the United hierarchy, according to the Daily Mail.

United are back in Premier League action when they host Fulham at Old Trafford on Sunday, February 1 and Mainoo is in line for his fourth start in a row.
