Former Man Utd ace Paddy McNair eyes promotion amid return to English football

Paddy McNair has returned to English football following two years with MLS side San Diego.

After coming through Manchester United’s academy ranks, Paddy McNair was given his debut under Louis van Gaal in September 2014.

McNair starred in a 2-1 Premier League victory over West Ham at the age of 19, but his selection came in the middle of a defensive injury crisis. The Red Devils were also reduced to 10 men in the game.

The Northern Ireland defender was credited with helping United hold onto their lead towards the end of the match.

After breaking into the first team, McNair made 27 appearances for United at the senior level.

McNair went on to play for Sunderland and Middlesbrough before signing for MLS side San Diego in 2024, although he would also spend a brief spell at West Brom on loan.

It was announced on Wednesday that former United defender McNair had completed a transfer from San Diego to Championship side Hull City.

The United graduate made 23 appearances for San Diego during their 2025 expansion campaign, but he now returns to England.

The 30-year-old has agreed an 18-month contract with the option of an extra year with Hull City, after spending a year-and-a-half in the United States.

McNair, who has never experienced promotion in his career, joins a side sitting fourth in the Championship – just eight points adrift of leaders Coventry City and five points back from second-placed Middlesbrough.

It could be a valuable addition for Hull City to have McNair’s experience within their ranks for the remainder of the season.

Not only did he come through the ranks at United, McNair also made almost 200 appearances for Middlesbrough. He is a player who knows the Championship like the back of his hand.

What did Paddy McNair say about joining Hull City?

After joining Hull City midway through the season, McNair is keen that his second season at the club sees him competing in the Premier League.

That would see McNair take on United at least twice next season.

Speaking after signing his contract at Hull City, McNair said: “I had a Zoom call with the manager a few weeks ago. He seems quite laid-back and chilled, and everyone speaks highly of him. I also spoke to ‘Crooksy’ (Matt Crooks) and ‘Gilo’ (Ryan Giles) before I came and they said all the lads in the changing room are great.

“I’ve played in the Championship for a lot of seasons and the one thing I’m missing is a promotion. It was a great opportunity to come to a big club that’s sitting well in the table. It would be great if we can push on towards the end of the season and get that goal.

“My best quality is probably with the ball. I love finding passes between the lines and competing. There’s nothing better than competing and getting three points.

“The biggest thing I missed while playing in America was definitely the atmosphere. I can’t wait to get back among it, competing and helping the team.”
