Kevin Nolan wants to bring in at least one forward player before the January transfer window closes next week.

Cobblers signed 17-year-old forward Jake Evans on loan from Leicester City this week, however having lost Ethan Wheatley earlier in the month, Nolan’s squad still lacks firepower, as demonstrated by the fact only Port Vale have scored fewer goals in League One this season.

Speaking on Thursday, Nolan confirmed he still wants another attack-minded player through the door and the club will be working hard right up until Monday's 7pm deadline to get a deal done, although they will be dictated by circumstances out of their control.

"We have 19 games left and we have lads coming back and hopefully we can add another one before the end of the window,” said Nolan. “We’re working hard on the recruitment side of it but it comes to what’s out there and it’s very sparse at the moment.

"People say we need a number nine but you go and speak to supporters of any club and they’ll say they need a number nine and unfortunately we’re a bit down the pecking order.

"They’ve got to hit a few branches before they come to us but we have to be clean in what we want and who we want. Firstly, it has to be someone who wants to be here, and secondly, it has to be someone who will make an impact on the team. That’s what we’re looking at.

"We want a forward player because obviously we lost Ethan Wheatley. We brought in Jake but we want another one and if I can force the owners to give me a little bit more, and if something comes up, I’m sure we can get to an agreement.

"It’s tough out there and it’s a tough window to negotiate but we are certainly trying. Hopefully we can add one or two.”
