Michael Carrick has given this Man United star a fresh lease of life since he became manager at the club.

Manchester United seem a transformed club under Michael Carrick, as they have won two games from two, playing an attractive yet effective brand of football. It seems a world away from life under Ruben Amorim, and United will hope for more of the same this weekend against Fulham.

Carrick has been able to get more out of certain players since joining, as he’s seen the likes of Matheus Cunha, Patrick Dorgu and Luke Shaw really flourish. However, there is one more name, who has really improved too.

Kobbie Mainoo was a strange case under Amorim, as he didn’t get much game time. But now that Carrick is in the fold, Mainoo is getting consistent minutes, and he’s performing to an elite level.

Man United in talks to sign Mainoo’s new contract

He is under contract until 2027, and he’s on a wage of just £20,000 per week, which, for a player who is getting regular starter minutes at Manchester United, is nowhere near what it should be.

According to the Daily Mail, talks between Man United and Mainoo are moving in the right direction, and there is confidence that the 20-year-old will agree a new long-term deal to stay at Old Trafford.

It has been said that Man United are very keen to keep hold of their young star, and that they expect him to play a big role under whoever the new manager is in the summer, because they want a coach who will play a four at the back system.

Carrick is a huge fan of Kobbie Mainoo

It is no surprise that the Man United boss has helped to unlock a young English midfielder, because that was him all those years ago at West Ham, before he moved to Tottenham and later Manchester United.

Carrick values Mainoo very highly, and he recognises the importance of nurturing young talent at United, because it is something that the club has done all through the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Speaking in an interview recently, Carrick said: “I think part of a career is a few ups and downs and sometimes it goes in different trajectories. But I think we've seen last week what Kobbie can bring. It was great.

"I've said it before, this club needs young players coming through and being the foundation for understanding what it means. Not just for the players or the squad, but for the club and for the supporters. I think it's something that we need to grasp, and we need to keep building on.”

Mainoo has started in both games under Carrick so far, and they were his first starts of the Premier League season this year, despite his talent, and Man United’s lack of solid options in the middle of the park.
