Fabrizio Romano suggests Man Utd would have to do something'crazy'if they want to sign Cole Palmer now

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Cole Palmer, but it seems luring him away from Chelsea will be extremely difficult.

Rumours of Cole Palmer being unsettled at Chelsea have been disputed this week, which leaves Manchester United in a grey zone.

United supporters would love to see Cole Palmer at Old Trafford, especially as he is a boyhood United fan.

Additionally, United need to start planning for life beyond Bruno Fernandes, and many believe Palmer is a good fit to replace the Portuguese playmaker.

But Palmer’s contract at Chelsea is a problem. Blues boss Liam Rosenior played down Palmer rumours and insisted he is untouchable, so United’s move for the 23-year-old would have to be extraordinary.

Fabrizio Romano update on Man United and Cole Palmer

Chelsea are under no pressure to sell Palmer because of the length of his contract at Stamford Bridge, so unless the player pushes internally for an exit then a move will be very difficult.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano provided an update on what it would take for United to sign Palmer.

“So zero at all. Also, Liam Rosenior is sending a very clear message that he is untouchable, happy and so important for Chelsea. So that’s it for this Cole Palmer story.

“Then let me also clarify, eventually, if at some point Chelsea and Cole Palmer could consider to part ways, it would take a crazy amount of money. But really crazy. So that’s the reality around Cole Palmer as of today.”

Man United should steer clear of Cole Palmer

As tempting as it is, United do not need Cole Palmer.

It would be a waste of resources to go and sign a playmaker when United have already invested in their attacking line. Palmer prefers to play drifting to the right, so his arrival would only complicate the development of Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo.

As Romano says, Palmer’s signature would also require a monumental fee, likely well over £100 million.

United’s financial resources are already stretched, and there are much bigger priorities for Ineos to address.

The summer of 2026 should be spent strengthening the midfield department. Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson should be well above Palmer on United’s shopping list.
