Report: Everton could sign player Man Utd let go for free in 2020 as contact made over late move

Everton were not expected to sign a new central midfielder before the 5pm deadline on Monday.

David Moyes is relatively well-stocked in his midfield department, with Idrissa Gueye now back from the Africa Cup of Nations while Harrison Armstrong impresses after returning from a loan spell at Preston.

However, a late market opportunity has arisen, as TEAMtalk say Everton have now been offered the chance to sign Angel Gomes from Marseille.

What should be Everton’s top priority before the deadline on Monday? 😬

Everton contacted about Angel Gomes deal

The England international looked set for a loan move to Wolves, but intermediaries have now opened the door for Everton to get involved in an attempt to find a better deal for the 25-year-old and Marseille.

TEAMtalk claim Newcastle, Brighton, Fulham, Sunderland and West Ham have been approached as well as Everton, although it is stressed that Wolves are still favourites to sign the man Manchester United released back in 2020.

Gomes knows Jordan Pickford and Jack Grealish from the England side, making three appearances alongside the Everton No.1 and two appearances with the Manchester City loanee for the Three Lions.

TEAMtalk do not state how Everton have reacted after being made aware of the situation, and with many other clubs in the running, it remains to be seen if the Toffees would even win the race.

Angel Gomes arrival would free up Harrison Armstrong to return to Preston

Paul Heckingbottom – manager of Preston – recently lost one of his best performers after Everton recalled Armstrong in the wake of Gueye departing for Morocco.

The Everton No.45 has remained at the Hill Dickinson Stadium and even started the 1-1 draw against Leeds last time out due to his impressive displays.

However, Heckingbottom suggested Everton will send Armstrong back when telling reporters that “we are all expecting him to” return to Deepdale this winter.

It remains to be seen if Moyes allows such a thing to happen, but the potential arrival of an England international in Gomes would surely increase the chances of a return to Preston for the 19-year-old.
