Carrick has 15 games remaining as the interim head coach of United, and Keane argued that he should not be hired permanently even if he wins every game left in 2025/26.

“I don’t think it’s the right decision. Good luck with it. I’m sticking to my guns. I’ve said my piece. I think he’s got the job, and if he gets it in the summer, you go ‘listen, good luck to him’.

“But as a caretaker manager, it’s a different animal to being the manager of United trying to win league titles over the next two, three, four, five years.

“I think you can get a better manager than Carrick. But I think he’s doing a good job, it’s perfect timing for him.”

On paper, Keane’s comments sound supportive of Carrick, but he made it clear that he still thinks appointing the 44-year-old would be a mistake.

United fans are in support of Carrick taking permanent charge, but Keane comes across as bitter and wanting Carrick to fail.

It is well known that Keane has history with Carrick and his family, and the United legend seems very hesitant to praise the current head coach despite his perfect start at Old Trafford.

Rio Ferdinand rightly called out Keane for his comments, and supporters should get behind Carrick regardless of whether he is hired in the summer or not.
