Didi Hamann has urged Liverpool to consider signing Harry Maguire this summer

Liverpool are assessing their plan of action for the upcoming summer transfer window, as it looks increasingly unlikely they will make any changes this month.

The Reds are in desperate need of signing new defenders as their backline has been stripped down to the bare bones. Arne Slot has been relying on midfielders to play out of position to keep their defence ticking during recent games, but there has been no sign of movement regarding a new signing this window.

Liverpool are expected to recruit heavily in the summer and recent reports have suggested it will be another expensive few months. However, Didi Hamann has suggested a more cost effective option for his former side.

Liverpool urged to consider signing Man United’s Harry Maguire

The former Liverpool midfielder believes his old side should be associating themselves with soon-to-be free agent Harry Maguire. It remains to be seen whether he will sign a new contract between now and the end of the season but Michael Carrick values the centre-back.

Maguire started the last two Premier League games for United after coming back from injury and contributed to the wins over Manchester City and Arsenal.

“You’ve got to give it to Harry Maguire because he got so much stick in the last few years and he always comes back,” Hamann told the Metro.

“If he’s available on a free then obviously have to think about it because I think what Liverpool need is more depth at the back.”

Why Harry Maguire to Liverpool surprisingly makes sense

If you take away the shock factor of Liverpool signing a Man United player, Maguire actually ticks a lot of boxes for the Reds.

The 32-year-old has come under serious criticism during his time at United but he has always bounced back and shown he is an important and effective defender to have in the ranks.

Maguire is an experienced international defender and is not afraid to get himself involved in the goal-scoring action when needed. The centre-back became England’s highest scoring defender in 2021, overtaking John Terry and Jack Charlton.

He actually has two goals at Anfield, scoring for United earlier this season and in a 1-1 draw with Leicester City in 2019.

As a typical centre-back who displays authority and strength on the pitch, Maguire has a lot of characteristics that would benefit Liverpool, as they continue to show weakness in their backline. He has also won trophies with United and was part of the Three Lions side that reached the 2020 Euros final.

Perhaps the most appealing part, is that Maguire will be free to sign this summer, if he doesn’t pen a new deal at Old Trafford. Liverpool are expected to go big again on the transfer front, so bagging a much-needed depth player for their backline for free would be great business in the long run.
