Man United left-back Luke Shaw has returned to his natural left-back position under Michael Carrick.

One of the biggest things when appointing a new manager will be the formation. United want to commit to a four at the back system, after the disaster that was Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation. One thing that means is that the traditional full-back comes into play again.

Luke Shaw has started at left-back in his first two games under Carrick and should continue to be the starter. However, Shaw is injury-prone and is now 30, with just over a year left on his contract. United will need to replace him soon.

Man United jump ahead of Arsenal for Nathaniel Brown

According to TeamTalk, Man United’s officials are in Germany to intensify their pursuit of Brown, and they state that United have jumped ahead of Arsenal in the race for Brown. The Gunners are going after him as a backup if Piero Hincapie doesn’t sign permanently.

The report also says that Frankfurt values the 22-year-old at over £40m, so he won’t come cheap, but Brown has already made two appearances for the Germany national team and over 60 appearances since joining Frankfurt in January 2024. Brown could be a great option in Carrick’s back four system, and could become United’s long-term replacement for Shaw, especially if he leaves at the end of next season.

Dorgu is no longer a left-back

Luke Shaw is the starting left-back under Carrick, but many would say that United also have Patrick Dorgu, who has always been a left-back in his career. If United have Dorgu, then why do they need to sign a replacement for Shaw?

However, Dorgu has always been more of a wing-back option, and now that Carrick is in charge, the Danish star has been playing as a winger, and he looks like a transformed player based on the last two games. Dorgu has suffered an unfortunate injury, but, either way, he has shown in the last month that he should be in an attacking role, so that does limit United’s options in terms of defensive full-backs.

They did sign 18-year-old Diego Leon in the summer, who is very highly rated, although the Paraguay international is yet to make an appearance for the first team, but he has performed in the Premier League 2 for the U21s, scoring one goal in four matches.
