Newcastle United duo to miss at least 8 matches - with key man out of Everton and Aston Villa…

Newcastle United latest news: Eddie Howe has provided updates on injuries suffered by Joelinton and Tino Livramento.

Eddie Howe has provided updates on Joelinton and Tino Livramento’s fitness with both players set to spend a number of weeks on the sidelines.

Joelinton was withdrawn from the field of play just after half-time on Sunday during their 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa at St James’ Park. Livramento, meanwhile, missed that game after he suffered a hamstring injury against Bournemouth earlier this month.

Both players will miss Newcastle United’s clash with Liverpool on Saturday night and are expected to be sidelined for another couple of weeks. Whilst the pair’s absence will be a huge miss for the Magpies, Howe provided a fairly positive update on their respective returns to action.

On Joelinton, Howe said: “He flew onto Barcelona after the game to get an injection into his groin. It was good news. The specialist feels he only needs one.

“That means his return could be quite quick, we're looking at weeks, not months. We're slightly unsure on the exact date but positive news.”

Asked for an update on Livramento, Howe added: “He's doing well. I believe he's having a second scan today to see the progress. Fingers crossed it's good news.

“If it is fingers crossed he'll be back running outside. I think we're still probably five to six weeks from today. We're looking at an early March return providing everything goes well.”

Those timeframes mean that Joelinton, at the very least, will miss games against Liverpool, Manchester City, Brentford, Tottenham Hotspur and, more than likely, their trip to Villa Park in the FA Cup next month. Livramento, meanwhile, will miss all of those matches above plus their two-legged Champions League tie against Qarabag and their Premier League games against Manchester City and Everton at the Etihad Stadium and St James’ Park respectively next month.

Newcastle United injury news

Elsewhere, there are still doubts over Bruno Guimaraes’ fitness heading into Saturday’s game. The Brazilian missed the defeat to Villa entirely and was an unused substitute in Paris on Wednesday night.

Howe admitted it was ‘unknown’ when his captain would return to action but he did not rule him out of featuring at Anfield. There were positive updates on Jacob Murphy and Will Osula who are both edging their way back into contention.

Dan Burn’s return to the starting XI in midweek, though, was a major boost for Howe - with the defender returning the faith shown in him with a player of the match performance at the Parc des Princes. Burn’s injury, coupled with Fabian Schar and Sven Botman’s fitness issues this season, has forced Malick Thiaw into a rigorous schedule with the clash in the French capital his 31st consecutive start for the Magpies.

Speaking about the German international, Howe added: "He's been very, very good physically. Slightly different position physical outputs than some of the other positions that you have to play, but, in saying that, with how we play, sometimes he covers good ground and I think he's done really, really well.

“I couldn't be more pleased with him and his performances, his professionalism and how he looks after himself. He's super professional, one of the first in and last out to make sure that he's on top of himself. So there's no sort of coincidence with that run of games that he's had and how well he's performed."
