Sunderland are said to be one of several clubs who have been contacted over a potential loan agreement for Angel Gomes
The 25-year-old, capped four times for England at senior international level, started his career at Manchester United, but has spent the majority of his playing time since on the continent, first with LOSC Lille, then on loan at Portuguese outfit Boavista, and now in the south of France.
Speculation over a prospective exit from the Stade Velodrome has mounted over the course of the January transfer window, however, and to that end, online outlet TEAMtalk claim that a number of English sides have been approached over the possibility of taking Gomes on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
As per this latest update, Sunderland are one of the clubs who have been contacted, as have Newcastle United, Everton, Brighton and Hove Albion, Fulham, and West Ham. An unnamed Championship outfit have also been approached, it is stated.
But it would appear that Wolves are leading the race for the midfielder’s signature, with the relegation-threatened club having supposedly “accelerated talks” to ensure that they wrap up an agreement before a potential “bidding scramble” ensues. Rob Edwards’ side are said to be in pole position at the time of writing, with talks between the Premier League strugglers and Marseille continuing to progress and a growing confidence that a deal can be struck. Any potential transfer is expected to be an initial loan with an obligation-to-buy clause attached.

What is the latest Sunderland-related transfer news?
While it would appear that Sunderland are not particularly close to securing any fresh acquisitions at the present moment in time, the Black Cats did sanction an exit for defender Aji Alese on Thursday.
The 25-year-old has endured an injury-hit stint on Wearside, and will be hoping that a loan move to Championship outfit Portsmouth can provide him with an opportunity to get some vital minutes under his belt, having been sidelined from first team action at the Stadium of Light for a full year.
Addressing the decision to send Alese out for a temporary stint on the south coast, Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said: “Aji has been incredibly patient and worked diligently to prepare himself for this next opportunity. The Championship is a league he’s familiar with, and this move is the ideal step for him in the second half of the season. We wish him well on the south coast.”
