Manchester United interim head coach Michael Carrick has broken his silence on the long-term future of Red Devils skipper Bruno Fernandes at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes kept the captain’s armband under Michael Carrick and has been an integral part of the Manchester United first-team squad at Old Trafford this season.

The 31-year-old Portugal midfielder has been playing in a more advanced role under Carrick after Ruben Amorim had previously dropped him into the two-man midfield.

Fernandes has impressed playing behind Bryan Mbeumo and the United captain has picked up back-to-back assists from the wins against Arsenal and Manchester City.

The United midfielder has netted five times and registered 11 assists in his 22 appearances across all competitions for the Red Devils in the 2025-26 season.

Bruno Fernandes is under contract with Manchester United until 2027 and the Portugal ace inked his current deal with the Premier League club back in 2024.

However, the former Sporting CP midfielder has faced speculation over his future in the past, including Fernandes being linked to Saudi Pro League outfit Al Hilal.

Carrick was part of the United coaching staff under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when the Red Devils first signed Fernandes from Sporting CP for an initial £47m fee in 2020.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, Michael Carrick praised the massive impact that Fernandes has had during his prolific spell at Old Trafford.

“I have seen the impact when he first arrived,” he said, as per the Manchester Evening News.

“He had a huge impact. You could see the passion, how much he wanted to do well. His consistency and level of performance.

“There is a lot to credit him for. We all want to win things, improve as a team but Bruno has been fantastic. Nothing but good things to say.”

United have been tipped to extend Fernandes’ future at the Premier League club and will reportedly hold talks with the Portugal ace ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Red Devils interim boss Carrick insisted that Fernandes is “fully committed” to Man Utd and refused to be drawn into the speculation around the player’s future.

“Let’s not get too far ahead,” he added.

“Let’s work towards this game and the window closing. My main agenda is getting through Fulham and Bruno is fully committed. Everything is positive so far.”

United included a 12-month extension option in Fernandes’ current deal, which would keep him at Old Trafford until June 2028 if the Red Devils were to trigger it.
