Steve Bruce names only current Man Utd player who would start for 1993/94 Double-winning team

Steve Bruce was a key figure in Manchester United’s first-ever Premier League and FA Cup Double-winning team in 1994. The legendary centre-back has named one player from the current squad who would’ve starred for the Reds when they achieved the Double for the first time.

Despite enduring such a topsy-turvy first half to the 2025/26 season, Manchester United find themselves in contention to finish in the Champions League spots.

United are currently fourth in the Premier League table after back-to-back wins over title contenders Man City and Arsenal marked a perfect start for Michael Carrick since returning to Old Trafford as head coach.

Former United winger Gordon Hill has urged fellow former players to rally behind Carrick and his players for the remainder of the season, after fans noticed an increased level of criticism towards the team from ex-stars.

All this shows is that the opinions of retired footballers carry weight, regardless of when they played. Carrick isn’t bothered by what they have to say, but he needs any support he can get in football’s biggest job.

Bruno Fernandes would make Man Utd Double-winning squad in 1993/94

The key players included Eric Cantona, Mark Hughes and Steve Bruce.

Bruce has been reflecting on his first Double-winning team in 1993/94 to decide which of United’s current squad would make the cut.

The 65-year-old told talkSPORT that Bryan Mbeumo has the potential to make it, but Bruno Fernandes stood the best chance.

Fernandes has remained one of United’s most influential players this season and will be remembered as one of the best post-Ferguson transfers.

The aim for Fernandes and his teammates isn’t winning a domestic double this season. There will be celebrations if they can secure Champions League football.

Steve Bruce honours at Man Utd

Bruce spent almost nine years at Old Trafford, starring in the heart of defence, but never made a single appearance for England.

He did win three Premier League titles, as many FA Cups, and the European Cup Winners’ Cup during his time at the club – on top of the League Cup and European Super Cup.

With 414 appearances under his belt, Bruce scored 51 goals, which is a remarkable achievement for a centre-back.

Bruce served as United captain between 1994 and 1996.
