Both Newcastle and Man United have been linked to the midfielder before the end of the January window.

The midfielder has been such a big talking point at Man United over the January window, as it is understood that the Red Devils are going to spend big on a new midfielder in the summer.

Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson remain United’s main three targets for the summer, but it is understood that United would like to sign a cheaper midfielder before the end of the January window, too.

Ruben Neves in contract talks with Al-Hilal

Neves’ contract at Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal was set to expire in June, and it was understood that the 28-year-old could leave the club and potentially make a return to Europe.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Neves looks set to stay at Al-Hilal, as he is in talks for a new contract, which has all but blown United’s chances of signing him. Romano posted on X: “Negotiations at final stages now between Ruben Neves and Al Hilal over new long-term deal. Agreement advancing over three year contract despite interest from Europe.”

Neves would have been a solid addition for United. He has shown in the past that he can deliver as a physical holding midfielder who is also very good on the ball. He also has an eye for goal, scoring 30 goals during his six-year spell at Wolves.

Man United looking to tie down midfield option

One of the keys to ensure United’s midfield is strong for next season and beyond, they don’t just need to bring players in, they also need to ensure that some of their best talent stays at the club for the long-term.

Kobbie Mainoo’s future has been uncertain this season, as Ruben Amorim refused to start him in the Premier League. But, now that Carrick has come in, Mainoo started both games so far, and has performed really well. It is understood that the Red Devils want to keep Mainoo for the future, and build around their young superstar.

That’s especially important for United, considering that Casemiro is due to leave at the end of the season, as he isn’t signing a contract extension at Old Trafford.
